מהרה ה' אלקינו ישמע בערי יהודה ובחוצות ירושלים קול ששון וקול שמחה, קול חתן וקול כלה, קול מצהלות חתנים מחופתם, ונערים ממשתה נגינתם, בא"י משמח חתן עם הכלה.
In the city of Dvinsk, there lived a terribly poor couple. But although they owned very little, they had one special plate that they used for special occasions. They took such pride in their one beautiful dish. One day, the dish was used for both meat and milk, causing a shailah whether or not the dish was treif.
The couple approached the great Rav Meir Simchah HaKohen Katz, the famed Ohr Same’ach, and they presented him with the shailah. Since the poor couple was unable to buy another dish, they waited anxiously to hear what the rav would say.
Was it kosher or treif?
The Ohr Same’ach pondered the question for a short while and finally rendered a decision. He told the couple to listen very carefully to what he had to say. “Take this dish home, and wrap it up very carefully. I know your children are now getting older and nearing marriageable age. I want you to put it away until the time comes for the first one to get married. At that time, take out this dish and use it for the tena’im.”
The message was clear. We must do the best we can to take difficult moments and transform them into productive learning experiences. Look for the nechamah, and it will always come.
As is said in the final berachah of Sheva Berachos at a wedding: "Meheirah Hashem Elokeinu yishama be'arei Yehudah u've'chutzos Yerushalayim kol sasson ve'kol simchah kol chassan ve'kol kallah kol mitzhalos chassanim mei'chuppasam u'ne'arim mi'mishteh neginasam. Baruch Atah Hashem mesame'ach chassan im hakallah — Hashem, our G-d, let there soon be heard in the cities of Yehudah and the streets of Yerushalayim the sound of joy and the sound of gladness, the voice of the groom and the voice of the bride, the sound of the grooms' jubilance from their canopies and of youths from their song-filled feasts. Blessed are You, Who gladdens the groom with the bride."
