והראנו בבנינו, ושמחנו בתיקונו, והשב כהנים לעבודתם ולוים לשירם לזמרם. והשב ישראל לנויהם. ושם נעלה ונראה ונשתחוה לפניך..
Rav Moshe Teitelbaum of Ujhel, known as the Yismach Moshe, spent his days waiting and anticipating Mashiach's arrival. One Succos, as he went around the bimah with his lulav and esrog in hand, he veered from the nusach of Hoshanos, and cried out the following tefillah. "Ribbono Shel Olam, the end of this galus must finally come! Not for my sake — I am willing not to have my neshamah redeemed; I am prepared to suffer as much as I need to. But for Your sake, please allow Mashiach to come.
"Heilige Bashefer, I must be honest with You. If I would have known that I would reach old age and have white hair and still Mashiach would not have arrived, I would have never been able to exist. I would not have been able to handle it.
"Ribbono Shel Olam, I am an old man, and quite easy to push around. But is that a chochmah, to trick a fool like me? Please, I beg of You. Let him come now! Not for my sake, but for Yours! Think of the Kiddush Hashem it would be! Please!"
And with that, the Yismach Moshe broke down sobbing, unable to move forward.
If only, as we recite the words of "Ve'Hareinu" of Mussaf — or any tefillah in which we beseech Hashem to bring the Final Redemption — we would feel a genuine longing for Mashiach and for the Geulah!
"Ve'hareinu be'vinyano. ve'samcheinu be'sikkuno; ve'hasheiv Kohanim la'avodasam, u'Levi'im le'shiram u'le'zimram, ve'hasheiv Yisrael linveihem. Ve'sham naaleh ve'neira'eh ve'nishtacheveh lifanecha — Show us its rebuilding and gladden us in its perfection. Restore the Kohanim to their service and the Levi'im to their song and music; and restore Yisrael to their dwellings. And there we will ascend and appear and prostrate ourselves before You…"
